Tech Gadgets

There are plenty of tech tools that should be a priority for drivers. Here is a great place to start. Make sure to check out some of the videos HERE …

There is a debate between a CB Radio, or GPS and witch one what should be at the top of the list. They are both important for different reasons, and I’ll give the breakdown of both.

The CB Radio tends to be low on the list for newer drivers. It’s old, outdated, and can be a pain in the ass at times. The CB (stands for “citizens band”) is helpful if you ever get in a bind, but more importantly it is a safety device. Most of the communication between drivers is giving locations of cops and speed traps, or banter between drivers. It can be extremely helpful if there is an accident, or heavy traffic. Other drivers communicate what lanes may be closed, or a detour to get around on other streets. If there is a road blocked, or a sudden stop, you will get a heads up from other drivers.

When looking for a decent CB, the Cobra 29 is a good start. You will need a mic, and possibly an antenna. Most of the Freightliner Cascadia “s have a built in antenna, and I’m pretty confident that International, and KW’s also have built in antennas. You will get a decent range (2-3 miles) and you can always upgrade to more powerful CB, and antenna.

A good GPS is (in my opinion) the first thing you should get. Spend the money, and get a good one. I personally prefer the Rand McNally. What ever you do, DO NOT depend on Google Maps or any map app on your phone! It will only get you in trouble. When setting up your GPS, it will ask several questions, and set the perimeters for you . Some of the basics: Height 13’6” Weight 80k pounds, length 53’ . It is imperative to get these correct, so when planning your route it will know what the best option.

Another reason I believe a GPS should be your first choice is trip planning. You can check for truck stops, rest areas, CAT Scales, and many other points of interest. I’ll get more in-depth trip planning in another section, Check out the Tool Box Page or the Videos page for more …

Thanks for checking in, and stay safe!
